I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong but when I receive items from a purchase order and I receipt them in - the QTY does not go against the items (does not update the qty) even tho the history for the item shows being received.
I do have those specific items types listed under Misc so am I right that items under Misc wont be updated? Do I need to put them under components? These items are just my postage and packaging items.

The idea is that a Misc item, in a Bill of Materials, is something that you don't want to count. When you process a work order MISC items are not taken (reduced) in your inventory.
Misc items are those which you don't want to count. So Misc items shouldn't go up or down so, as you say, when you buy them the quantitity doesn't go up.
If the MISC item doesn't meet your needs then don't use it.
