I am aware that MiniMrp can’t make part changes to works order items, without changing the underlying BOM in Assemblies.

However, I am trying to think of a way to do this as the amount of changes we are doing, due to component supply issues, is becoming a problem.

We can’t just change the BOM, because we may have works orders outstanding with the original part, and this also may only be a short term change.

We can’t create a new BOM, because this would mean changing all the BOMS above the changed one for each component change, ultimately mean a top level part code change for a component change.

We are thinking or re-working our BOMs so that each part number is specific to the assembly it belongs to, so we can use the suppliers tab to include multiple parts that can be used, this can’t be done at the moment as we may have the same part shared between two or more customer assemblies, they may not all agree on the substitute part. It does mean you could end up with shortage recommendations for the same part required for the same time, just different assemblies.

Another way is to leave the parts alone (perhaps just broaden the description) and instead of ordering the part required, order a substitute, and include a note on the order, and part label.

Just wondering if anyone else has this issue, any suggestions for a better way?

Thanks

I am having this problem at the moment with semiconductor shortages, I am handling it with the revision input on the assembly, change the Rev number, zero the on hand qty and then drop down the tools from the hamburger button at top left next to the "ItemDetail" label and click save as, this creates an alternate revision of the assembly with the same part number/description and sale value and a different revision number/letter you can then export the bom as a csv from the original, import it straight in to the new revision and change what needs changing without affecting the original assembly and bom.

a bit fiddly but it works, you just have to add the alternate parts as their own new item number in components first.
