Topic:   Alternative Parts

I noticed that assemblies can have a quantity per unit of 0. This would allow possible alternatives (i.e. allowed component alternatives) to be included.

i.e. You could have several different parts as options, for the preferred, only the preferred would have a quantity added.

Is there any way that works orders could allow quantity changes before, or when in allocated state?

This would allow works orders to be changed to allow alternative components to be used, if the preferred was not available.

I am aware of the method of creating a new assembly with a different part, this is not practical, as if it's used on anoth assembly, that would also have to change, and the sales order would have to change.

Sorry. No. MiniMRP doesn't handle alternative parts. You'd need to do it manually.

What I have done for alternate parts is this:

Any part that has an alternate gets a ' ~ R' at then end. This lets me know that if we are short that specific part, I know to then check the comments of that part to see what the alternate(s) is/are.

Yeah, it's something you have to do manually, but at least it doesn't involve going to do any research over which parts do and do not have alternate parts.

The problem is how do you actaully use the alternative part in the BOM.

For example - if i have a BOM, MRP tells me i need to order it, then find i can't or don;t want to use this part. I can check my master part list or notes etc.

But i need to be able to substitute that part in the BOM, so MRP tells me to order the new part and it will have a history.

It's not such an issue with generic parts, we just have alternative suppliers with different parts listed, but if you have two parts stored in your component list, and your could use either, is a bit more of a problem.

As i said, you can't really use an alternative assembly, because that would mean top levels would also have to change, and you can't just buy something different, becuase it would then be booked in wrong.

I understand why this is not possible, MiniMRP is not creating a copy of the BOM for the works order, ie. so it can then be modified with changing the original BOM, it's just relational.

The other thing is, what about when you wnat o make both types at the same time, one using the orginal part, one using the alternative. In these cases it must be a seperate assembly / works order.

Using a BOM with 0 stock on some component lines as described above sounds good - If you were able to aupdate the "Total Qty" field in the works order, just for that works order.

But does not seem that there is any desire to make any changes to the system.

Desire to make changes. There is continued development.

But please understand that MiniMRP is not intended to be a fully loaded ERP/MRP system. It's a SubSet of MRP features that most people use most of the time.

I'm sure everyone that uses the program would like something extra. But everyone wants something different. If we added everything for everybody we'd have a 'MAXI' MRP just like the dozens of other MAXI's out there.

I agree, sorry, i meant "Major Changes" to the system. MiniMRP is great tool - but, some very key features are missing, these are not just "wants" these are essentials for any MRP.

I agree with others about stock and BOM costing issues, the ability to swap parts (at the moment this is big thing), i thought the idea above was good, adding parts to the BOM then just being able to change the quantity of each as required in that works order, sounded like it should be possible.

Another issue is the ability to know when something has been done, MiniMRP has no change log or page to look at to see the development, so you could decide if it's right to download the latest version.

The shortage report would be so much better if it could be filtered, and reports customised a little (or just ensuring that all data on the relevant forms are available for the reports).

As i said - i think it's a really great product, you can see it's been carefully developed over time.
